1 - Photograph A portrait always starts with a good quality, close up photograph which is either sent via the web or though the post.

2 - Pencil sketch I sketch Bozley's outline in pencil on to a large piece of pastel paper. The rest of the picture will be in soft pastel.
3 - First layers I cover the face with white and blend it with my finger to make a smooth surface. I begin to add the main blocks of colour on top.
4 - Fur Over the main blocks of colour I add the fur, working in the direction the fur grows around the dog's face.
5 - Eyes and nose I add the eyes and nose. Touches on white on the pupils and around the nostils bring these areas to life.
6 - Neck and collar The last area is the fur below the neck and the collar and tag. I add my signature and spray the picture with fixative. Bozley is ready to be sent.
With thanks to Bozley's owner - and to Bozley!
Book Recommendations
I would highly recommend these books to anyone who enjoys art or creating portraits.
Wendy Caporale is an amazing artist, and these children's portraits are simply stunning. She includes many step by step demonstrations, paying particular attention to lighting. In the last part of the book she covers everything you need to create your own business.
Probably the most useful book on pastel painting I've ever read. Numerous demos and some absolutely beautiful pictures. Includes special sections concentrating on eyes and fur that really help to bring a portrait alive.
